2008-09 Season Review...

2008-09 was always going to be a tough season for the womens National League team with the loss of 6 players from the previous seasons squad over the summer - Gail, Svenja, Martina moving abroard, Leoni & Michelle moving away and joining different teams & Claire pregnant with Elliot.

Things weren't helped when Antonella picked up a shoulder injury in the second match which kept her sidelined for the rest of the season & then Monika out for 6 weeks later in the season with a broken finger. It certainly made selecting the starting 6 a lot easier, as too often there were only 6 players available. So it was a huge relief that new players Patricia, Romina & of course Tabea joined the team.

The league this season was different to last year as the 3 teams at the top and bottom of the league quickly opened gaps/fell away leaving the remaining 6 teams to fight over the middle ground. In the end we finished in 7th place with 9 wins & 7 losses.

There were 2 matches where I felt we could/should have won (Brentwood & South Hants) as we had beaten both teams in the return fixture. It was a little disappointing to have not pushed Ashcombe, Malory (in the cup) & Chester a little harder to at least have taken a set off them, also I think that Portsmouth were very beatable when we played them at their place in February as they appeared fragile & low in confidence which we didn't exploit.

The highlights of the season were the victories over IMKA Polonia 3-2 in the Cup, this was a match they were expecting to win & we matched what they had to offer hit for hit, block for block in a great match. The other main highlight was beating Tameside, again they were expecting a victory but on this occasion the quality of the volleyball was not so great with a high error count for both teams & although they scored more points in total we won them at the right times !!!

One huge positive to take out of the season is that we won all 5 of the matches that went to 5 sets which shows a great fighting spirit in the team.

Tabea & Monika shared the majority Most Valuable Player votes (as voted by the opposition) between themselves (5 & 4 votes respectivly) while the run away winner in Division 2 was Sam O'Connor of Norwich, a good player in an ordinary team. In fact the 4 out of the top 5 "players of the season" came from teams in the bottom 4 places which does make you wonder if they really are the best players in the division.

We have the Wessex tournament (this year being held in Plymouth) to look forward to in early June, then a few weeks break before we start all over again in July.

It is highly likely that there will be some vacancies on next seasons squad, so if you are interested in playing (or even just training with the squad) please contact us (details below).
Please note that you needn't necessarily be a member of Guildford & we'd be happy if you wanted to continue playing for another club in local league competitions while playing National League at Guildford.

Please do get in touch for an informal (& confidential) chat if you are at all interested.

National League Season ends on Sunday...

Guildford go into their last match of the 2008-09 season away to South Hants on Sunday (5th April) on a 3 match unbeaten run.

Due to the nature of the National League calander Guildford can claim it is 2 months since they lost a match, in that time they had what was probably their best performance of the season & certainly the best result when the beat promotion chasing Tameside 3-2 in a thriller that actually saw the team from the North West score more points.

A competent & efficient 3-0 defeat of Herts Nomads followed the day after. The same could not be said about Guildford's performance against already relegated Plymouth as they laboured to a hard fought 3-2 victory.

Unlike last season the top & bottom 3 teams have been clear for a while now, although the final positions still need to be resolved. So Guildford go into the last match with only pride (& finishing in 6th or 7th place) to play for, which is probably just as well. Without providing scouting info to the opposition, it is safe to say that Guildford will be "missing a few players".

The team will still be keen to complete the double over South Hants following their 3-0 victory earlier in the season.

Poor Start from the ladies...

Guildford Ladies did not make a good start to the season against local rivals Ashcombe Dorking, who last year were relegated from Division 1. The Guildford team seemed to be suffering from lack of pre season practice as a team and lost in straight sets 25-14 25-19 25-14.
Coach John Biddiscombe is hoping for a better performance in their next fixtures when they travel north for two matches in one weekend. Middleborough College and Chester Volleyball Club.

Last matches...

Guildfords NVL season ended in much the same way that it had been going for most of 2008, with a convincing win followed by a close defeat.

Guildford were in a confident mood for their last home match of the season against Portsmouth & ran out 3-1 winners.

With an outside chance of still making the play-offs Guildford made the long trip to Plymouth for what they knew would be a tight match against a relegation threatened team.

Despite an inconsistant performance Guildford had their chances to win the match & even in the deciding 5th set they set up a strong position with an 8-3 lead at the end change, however they were unable to capatalise on this & eventually lost the match 2-3.

A weekend of mixed fortunes...

After a busy weekend of volleyball action the play-off picture at the top of Womens National League Division 2 is still no clearer, with Guildford finishing the weekend exactly where they started it one place & two points off a play-off place in 4th.

Guildford travelled to table toppers Reading Aces on Saturday to renew a long standing local rivalry. The first set was evenly matched, before Reading pulled out a lead mid way through the set which Guildford despite trading sideouts were unable to overcome.

Reading continued to pile on the pressure in the 2nd set with tough serving backed up with powerful hitting from the middle. Guildford on the otherhand faced with a resilliant defence tried to increase the pressure with their own attackes & serves which resulted in a costly increase in errors.

Reading closed out a comfortable 3-0 win to confirm their top place.

On Sunday Guildford travelled to Shropshire to play Cleobury Mortimer who had recently strung together a run of good results to move away from the relegation zone, culminating in an impressive 3-2 victory over 2nd placed Dulwich the day before.

With players missing, Guildford were forced to switch their defensive specialist Libero player Claire Bourgouin to play as a hitter & outside power hitter Antonella Dinghile had to move to middle blocker.
Guildford started strongly pulling out an early lead 6 point as the home side took time to settle & were clearly affected by a series of handling faults called on their young setter. Bit by bit Guildfords lead was chipped away back to 1 point, but they managed to hang tough at the end of the set to clinch it 27-25.

Guildford started the 2nd set in the worst possible fashion losing the first 5 points. While Guildford were siding out with a reasonable consistancy they weren't making any impact from their own service, that was untill the Claire Bourgouin stepped up & scored 8 points off her serve to tie up the scores at 18 all. Having done the hard work to get back into the set Guildford showed all the signs of blowing it by failing to make a meaningful attack from the next two Cleobury serves.
Coach John Biddiscombe called a time out & moved the recieve formation round so that setter Karen Rossi passed the ball & the versitile Claire Bourgouin played setter. The resultant perfect pass(from the setter come passer), pin point accurate set (from the passing specialist come setter)& devistating spike from Antonella Dinghile steadied the ship & a further 6 points from Svenja Nemetschek's serve were sufficient to clinch the set.

The 3rd set saw Cleobury take another early lead which was quickly pegged back by Guildford. Cleoburys setter was harshly judged to have made an illegal back court attack & when this was quickly followed by the referee calling another handling fault the Cleobury coach's simmering frustration with the refereefinally boiled over with an outburst that earned him a yellow card. The resulting disruption affected both teams, but it was Guildford who were first to get back into their stride & pull into a lead, despite a late rally from the home side Guildford clinched the set 25-21 & a welcome 3-0 win. Antonella Dinghile was awarded the Most Valuable player.

Guildford's two remaining matches are at home against Portsmouth on 30th March & away to Plymouth on 6th April.
Portsmouth, like Guildford, still have ambitions of making the play-offs & Plymouth have relegation worries, so both will be keenly contested matches.
In fact even at this late stage in the season there are only two out of the twelve teams who have nothing left to play for in this tightly contested division.

Guildford up to 4th...

Guildford moved up to 4th place in the Womens National Volleyball Leage Division 2, taking full advantage of their game in hand to move into contention for a play-off place.

With the league so tight this season the 3-0 away victory at Portsmouth will do no harm at all to the Surrey sides set difference, if it comes down to that at the end of the season.

With 3 players missing Guildford were struggling to find any consistancy making too many unforced errors in the opening set & they were further hampered when setter Karen Rossi injured her hip making a spectacular dive to rescue a ball which restricted her movement for the remainder of the match.
Guildford were 5 points adrift as Portsmouth broke through the 20 point mark but a strong service run from Renata Richardson saw Guildford first draw level and then take a sideout from a Portsmouth hitting error to win the set.

If Guildford won the first set against the run of the play then there was certainly no doubt about the second set with the momentum well and truly swung in favour of the Surrey side. Strong serving meant that Portsmouth were often limited to only one attacking option & when they were able to run their favoured middle attacks they were matched by a solid block & determined defence.
In contrast Guildford were able to use all their hitting options and as soon as their hosts plugged one defensive hole Guildford were immediatly able to open up another one, taking the second set by a 10 point margin.

Guildford started strongly in the third set opening up a significant lead, but as would be expected in such a tight league teams simply don't give up without a fight & twice Portsmouth looked like they were on the verge of staging a comeback, both both times they were thwarted by a determined Guildford team as they closed out a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-15, 25-21).

Forthe second league match in succession Svenja Nemetschek was voted Most Valuable Player.

Guildford have a week off before another away match in Winchester against South Hants on 24th February.

Polonia too powerful for Guildford...

Guildford failed in their bid to reach the Womens Knock Out Cup semi finals as they lost 0-3 at home to Polonia at Guildford Spectrum last Saturday.

The start of the match was delayed by an injury to one of the Polonia players during the warm-up,but it was Guildford who started the match in a very nervous fashion, paying the high flying Division 1 side too much respect. Guildford were unable to make any headway off the back of their own service & were typically giving up 2 or 3 points each time they faced a Polonia serve. As the set progressed, Guildford gained a little confidence but too late to affect the score line significantly.

Greater resolve introduced a element of stability in passing & defence which saw Guildford trading points in the early stages of the second set,but again a series of tough serves allowed the visitors to open up a lead. Despite a spirited fight back & some controversial decisions going in favour of the some side they were unable to challange.

Guildford saved their best to last as they took an early lead in the 3rd set, taking full advantage of Polonia switching their influential setter to a hitting role. Guildford combined straight forward hitting power with off speed attacks, tips & dumps to frustrate the West London side. The end to the set was really tight with both teams having to save set points before the referee called a handling fault against Guildford on match point. Polonia were worthy 3-0 winners (25-12, 25-18, 29-27) & now have a semi finalmatch against London rivals Swiss Cottage.

Guildford are back in National League action on Saturday with an away match against Portsmouth.

Guildford win in Devon...

Guildford kept their Division 2 playoff hopes alive with an assured 3-1victory away to Devon last Sunday in the Womens National Volleyball League.Only 6 points seperate the 2nd & 8th placed teams & with several, includingGuildford, having games in hand the league is heading towards an exciting final third to the season.

Guildford nerviously traded points with their hosts in the early phase ofthe opening set, but suffered a string of errors when put under pressure by a tough Deven service run, when they eventually managed to side out they were 7 points down. Guildford managed to put a string of points togetherwhen Danai Spania went to the service line to get back into contention, butalthough tying level at 23 all Devon went on to take the set by the 26-24.

The momentum was definately with Guildford as they surged to a commanding lead in the second set which despite a fight back by Devon they were able to hold on to comfortably take the set. By this stage Guildford had got to grips with a sometimes tough Devon serve & restricted space in the hall, their cause was further helped by an injury to one of Devons middleblockers. Guildford were varying their attacks well especially in the middle with Svenja Nemetschek putting in a display of power & subtle offspeed attacks which continually kept the Devon defence guessing & earned her the Most Valuable player nomination. Guildford closed the match out, taking the 3rd & 4th sets to 23 & 22 points respectivly.

Guildford now look forward to their first ever Cup Quater Final appearance against Division 1 side Polonia from west London, the match will be held at Guildford Spectrum on Saturday afternoon with a 4pm warm-up & first serve at 4:30pm. There is no admission charge for the match & supporters will bev ery welcome to come along & get behind the team.

Cup Revenge for Guildford...

Guildford booked their place in the Quater Finals of the Volleyball England Knock-Out Cup with a convincing 3-0 home win over Plymouth.

Having been seen a commanding 2-0 & 16-11 lead slip when the team met at ACS in the league earlier this season as Guildford crashed to their first loss of the season, the home side were wary of being too complacent.

Despite a lack of training hours after the Christmas break Guildford started with a game plan to contain the two main attacking threats of their visitors, which they managed to execute with precision. Throughout the match Plymouth never managed more than a 1 or 2 point lead with Guildford quickly establishing a comfortable buffer in each set, to take the match 3-0 (25-19, 25-15 & 25-17

Before Guildford can think about a quater final match against Polonia from Division 1 provisionally arranged for 3rd February that have 2 important league matches against South Hants on Sunday 20th January @ ACS & away to Devon on 27th

Guildford Beat Birmingham ...

After two consecutive victories, Guildford were looking to make it three out of three in their third league match, away to university team Birmingham. Birmingham had played their first league match the day before against Dulwich Tuskers losing 3-2, and were playing their first season in Division 2 after winning the Division 3 play-off in the 2006/07 season. As such, they were a somewhat unknown opponent and the warm up over the net hinted at a possible tough match to come.

Guildford started the first set confidently with a clean kill from Svenja Nemetchek through the middle on the first point, taking the serve off Birmingham straight away. It was evident during the first few points that some issues were going to come up with regards to the Birmingham setter, with Guildford calling on a number of occasions for a two touch decision from the referee. Coupled with an early injury to Gail Cooper (knee) the first set was not to be a comfortable one for the Guildford side. For a while the points see-sawed between both sides with Guildford managing to reach the finishing post first, despite certain distractions, with a 6 point lead to wrap the set up 25-19.

Similar conditions prevailed in the second set and Guildford found themselves level-pegging at 13-13. A strategic time out by JB saw the Birmingham serve hit the net, and Guildford suddenly found some momentum with a string of serves from the Guildford setter Karen Rossi giving them a four point breathing space. The Guildford block also began to penetrate the Birmingham attack more successfully and the opposition started to look slightly rattled as refereeing decisions started going Guildford’s way. Guildford gradually pulled away and won the set 25-22.
The loss of the second set appeared to be Birmingham’s undoing. A large number of unforced errors by the opposition meant that Guildford were given more free-balls, and the Surrey side kept up the pressure with an increased number of hits finding the floor or being put out by the Birmingham defence. Guildford gradually built up a 13 point lead and swatted aside a small Birmingham come-back to take the third set 25-12.

It was a convincing display from Guildford, with new players Martina Pastorkova and Leoni Lallart settling further into the team structure with good contributions to the Guildford attack. With three wins now under their belt, Guildford look forward to hosting regular Division 2 rivals Devon at home at the ACS School, Cobham on Sunday 21st October.

Renata Richardson was awared MVP nomination by Birmingham.

Guildford Cruise Against Cambridge ...

A team of ten players travelled north to take on the somewhat unknown opposition of Cambridge. Cambridge were promoted from Division 3 last year having won all their league games in the 2006-07 season. However, on the back of a fine 3-0 win over Dulwich Tuskers a few weeks ago, Guildford were looking forward to the encounter.

The first set saw newcomer Leoni Lallart get her first match experience for Guildford in the outsider hitter role. For a while both teams seemed nervy as if testing the water of the opposition, with the points see-sawing backwards and forwards between each side. Guildford managed to gain some momentum with some good serving in the last few points by substitute Gail Cooper to take the set 25-22.

For the second set coach John Biddiscombe (aka JB) stuck with the finishing 6 from the first set. However, Cambridge managed to find their own game with some attacks penetrating the Guildford block, as well as some wobbly receiving by Guildford on the Cambridge serve. Guildford were also also unlucky to lose one of their middle hitters, Svenja Nemetchek, to an untimely injury which resulted in her losing sensation to her left hand. Despite fighting hard, and with a number of strategic substitutions / time outs by JB, Guildford lost the set 21-25.

The third set was a completely different affair. Guildford confidence seemed to increase with the serving becoming a dominant factor in the set with some aggressive point-winning serves from Monika Regrutova. Cambridge were obviously rattled somewhat with a complaint of ‘too much aggression at the net’ being taken to the referee. Despite this Guildford maintained their focus and fought through a mid-set ‘hitch’ when the Cambridge serve threatened to put a dampener on the Guildford run-away train. Finding their feet again, Guildford found that the increased number of free balls coming back over the net improved the connection between setter, Karen Rossi, and the hitters and Guildford pulled away winning the set comfortably 25-16.

Having won the third set with some ease, Guildford’s old enemy ‘Complacency’ threatened to rear its head again. The Guildford defence was exposed by Cambridge who began to find their way through the blocks, with Guildford being caught flat footed on a number of occasions. Despite JB’s best efforts in using the full bench of substitutes Guildford were unable to repeat the performance they produced in the third set and Cambridge ensured a fifth set decider, winning 25-22.

The fifth set proved to be similar to the first set with both teams appearing edgy. Guildford however were bolstered by the return to the court of Svenja Nemetchek. Points were traded back and forth with Guildford finding the upper hand to win the first milestone at the changeover 8-7. Some key serving by Guildford found them gradually gaining the upper hand. At 14-13 Lisa Furness dived in to defend a short ball resulting in what appeared to be momentary hesitation by the opposition who were caught on the back foot defensively and which resulted in a Cambridge error. The result could only go one way and Guildford celebrated their five set win with some relief.

Guildford’s Renata Richardson was voted MVP by Cambridge.

Next match is away to Birmingham on Sunday 14th October.

Guildford Deny Dulwich ...

Guildford started their 2007-08 NVL season in Division 2 looking to improve on their previous season’s finishing position of runner-up, having just missed out on promotion to Division 1. With a well-stocked squad of twelve players including three new comers (Leoni Lallart (Fr), Martina Pastorkova (CZ) and Michelle Bridenbaker (US)), the team were looking forward to their first league match at home against Dulwich Tuskers.
Coach John Biddiscombe (JB) found himself in an enviable position of having eleven players to choose from. With Claire Bourgouin and Karen Rossi resuming their usual positions of Libero and Setter respectively Guildford commenced battle against their regular Division 2 rivals. In the previous season’s league encounters against each other, Dulwich Tuskers had come off on the winning side of two five set matches. Needless to say, Guildford were looking to set the record straight for the new season and it was an extremely confident start by the Surrey side who refused to buckle under pressure throughout a tightly contested game – final score 3-0 to Guildford (25-20, 26-24, 25-23).

Dulwich Tuskers voted Karen Rossi MVP.

Team: Karen Rossi (Setter & Captain), Claire Bourgouin (Libero), Antonella Dinghile, Francine Liu Yuk Pat, Gail Cooper, Lisa Furness, Martina Pastorkova, Monica Retgrova, Michelle Bridenbaker, Renata Richardson, Svenja Nemetchek.

Bouyed by their first set win of the season Guildford weathered the Oxford vocalisations to take the 3rd (25-23).

Oxford tried to rally in the 4th set but with the score at 8-11 Guildford clicked and when they eventually lost the serve the score was 20-12. There was no way back for Oxford, even with increased shouting, and it eventually all fell quiet as Guildford took the set and the match (25-15).
