Mistral 3rd at SEVA Tournament...

Guildford qualified for the South East regional leg of the Volleyball England Regional Champions Trophy as the 2nd placed in the Surrey womens league.
The top two teams from the 9 counties in the South East of England were invited to the tournament at the Ashcombe Volleyball Centre in Dorking. Due to the number of teams, the matches on Saturday were timed with the team leading when the buzzer sounded the winner.
Guildfords struggled to adjust to the cramped conditions in their opening match against a strong Sussex Dolphins & found themselves trailing with 5 minutes to go, but a favorable rotation with the tallest players at the net meant the scroes were level at the buzzer. So a sudden death single point had to be played (the volleyball equlivent of the penalty shoot out), which after some heart stopping moments resulted in a Guildford victory.
The next match was against Basingstoke, a team containing a few familiar faces. This time Guildford built an early lead & despite a few scares were able to clinch the match.
Guildford were next pitted against Surrey rivals Spelthorne, the team that beat them to the league title. As with the two league encounters that was a classic match between two evenly matched teams, but on this occasion it was Guildford who had the upper hand.
With a Semi Final place now almost certain Guildford were able to relax and play a free flowing game, securing comfortable victories over both Solent & Canterbury.
Sundays Semi Final was against Worthing, again two evenly matched teams with several of the players on both teams having already met a couple of times this season in the National League fixtures against Ashcombe. The tournament now switching to a best of 5 set format for the semi & finals, Guildford dropped the first set before fighting back in the second set. Worthing came right back in the 3rd set & for a while it looked like Guildford may be able to force a deciding 5th set, but they were unable to maintain the consistancy of the previous day eventually losing the match 3-1 & having to settle for 3rd place in the tournament.

Guildford Pride Restored...
The womens National League team went some way to restoring club pride with back to back vistories which finally banish any lingering worries about getting dragged into a relegation play-off.
Saturday saw the injury hit team dig deep to twice come back against promotion chasing Tameside, before storming to a dramatic 5th set victory. The team stringing together some improved constistancy previously seen only in flashes against the top teams.
Guildford entertained Hert Nomads on Sunday full of confidence & quickly cruised to a 2-0 lead before taking their feet off the gas, offering a glimmer of hope to the visitors. But Guildford showed an impressivly ruthless streak to finish out the set with an impressive 10 point run.
